turned spalted wood bowl

Mulberry Bowl

This is a great lesson in solid geometry. People often ask me how I get the design
in the grain. My answer is that I don’t do anything. It is all right there from the start. All I do is remove wood that is covering the view of that curved plane.

The pattern in the grain is brought out by making a curving cut to remove the waste wood. The curved shape of the bowl makes it look like it was created on purpose but it was just a lucky view of what nature had already created.
