Butternut hollow vessel

Butternut Hollow Vessels

For some reason tis vessel is a favorite of mine. It measures 6.5 inches in width and 4.5 inches in height. It is a turning of contrasts. The symmetrical shape of the body of the vessel contrasts sharply with the asymmetrical opening. The smoothness of the body contrasts with the jagged annual growth rings. The dark tones of the heart wood contrast with the white sap wood.

There was no effort on my part to provide contrasts. It just flowed out of nature. I approach each piece of wood I place on the lathe to try to get the best object I can from that piece. The rest just flows naturally. Art critics can come along later and analyze why a piece is good or not but the creative process is not so contrived. My best work seems to happen when I am not trying to achieve some special effect.
