Spalted Sugar Maple Decorative Pot

Butternut Hollow Form

This hollow vessel is from Butternut wood. It is a first cousin to American Black Walnut and has edible nuts which have a buttery color, hence the name Butternut. I think the tan tone of the wood with its many variations is very pleasing to the eye. Unfortunately we are losing our Butternuts to a fungal disease called Butternut Canker.

This turning shows two black streaks of canker injury. The round black area on the side is just a knot left by a branch This tree had actually died and that is why it was given to me. So, in a sense this is a pathological specimen but even in disease, Nature creates much beauty. This vessel is 9.5 inches wide by 3.25 inches high. there is much for the eye to take in with this gift from Nature. Notice how the color appears to change depending on the angle of view.
