knot grain maple bowl

Trumpet Shaped Maple Bowl

This bowl was more luck than design. I just happened to include two branch knots in the open design. What is amazing is the beauty of nature.

To reinforce the wood where branches emerge the wood grain runs in many different directions. This makes the wood stronger and more resistant to splitting than if all the wood cells were arranged in a parallel manner as is usually seen in straight wood segments.

The different planes of the growth of the wood cells causes light to be reflected differently and give the illusion of lighter and darker bands and waves. The optical effect produces a pattern which is so pleasing to the eye.

The open design was inspired by a trumpet shaped flower. The defects were repaired with turquoise colored Inlace. This is the same material they use to repair dents in auto bodies.
