Red Oak Natural Edge Bowl from 150 Year Old Tree

This 150 year old red oak tree was so large that I was able to cut sections so that each one was almost perfectly quarter sawn.

This means that the cuts made in the wood with the gouge can be almost exactly at right angles with the growth rings. That is what gives this marvelous bull's eye ring design.

The lighter part of the ring is the early wood laid down in spring and early summer when growing conditions are nearly ideal. The darker part of the ring is when the growth slows in late summer and early fall. The early and late wood comprise one annual growth ring.
